Overview
CaloScan is designed with privacy in mind. All your data stays on your device. We do not collect, store, or share any personal information on our servers.
Data Stored on Your Device
CaloScan stores the following data locally on your iPhone using Apple's SwiftData framework:
- Food diary entries (meals, portions, nutritional values)
- Your personal food library (learned foods, recipes)
- App settings (calorie goal, macro targets, name)
This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us.
Camera On-device only
CaloScan uses your camera to photograph food for AI-based recognition. Photos are processed entirely on-device using Apple's Vision framework. No images are uploaded to any server.
Photo Library On-device only
You may optionally choose images from your photo library for food recognition. Selected images are processed on-device and not stored or transmitted.
Health App (HealthKit)
With your permission, CaloScan can:
- Read active calories burned — to calculate your net calorie balance
- Write meals to the Health app — so your nutrition data is in one place
HealthKit data is never shared with third parties and is only used within the app as described above.
External APIs
When you search for food by name or scan a barcode, CaloScan queries these public databases:
- USDA FoodData Central — a free US government food database (api.nal.usda.gov)
- Open Food Facts — an open-source food product database (openfoodfacts.org)
Your search query or scanned barcode is sent to these services. No personal information is transmitted. Please refer to their respective privacy policies for details.
Local Network
CaloScan can optionally connect to a local server on your home network to import recipes from the MeinLeben app. This connection is entirely local and no data is sent to the internet.
No Analytics, No Ads
CaloScan contains no advertising, no tracking, no analytics SDKs, and no third-party data collection of any kind.
Children's Privacy
CaloScan does not knowingly collect any data from children under 13.
